Obama is brilliant for using the whole Bin Laden incident to help him gain approval ratings. I would assume that one of the main reasons he took such a strong interest in announcing Bin Laden's Death was for this purpose. By announcing the news to the public Obama is leaving just enough room for voters nationwide to feel like he brought the victory.
While I do think it's a nice plus for Obama that bin Laden's death comes just as Obama begins to launch his 2012 presidential campaign, I do not think the announcement was made specifically for gaining political support. Probably any president would have announced the death of an infamous national enemy. Moreover, the death of bin Laden brings a much needed morale boost for America after our prolonged involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan. I think by all means the president should be participating in, if not at the forefront, of such a victory (even if it is not owed solely to him).
